What personal data we collect and why we collect it

Comments

When visitors leave comments on the site we collect the data shown in the comments form, and also the visitor’s IP address and browser user agent string to help spam detection.

An anonymized string created from your email address (also called a hash) may be provided to the Gravatar service to see if you are using it. The Gravatar service privacy policy is available here: https://automattic.com/privacy/. After approval of your comment, your profile picture is visible to the public in the context of your comment.

Media

If you upload images to the website, you should avoid uploading images with embedded location data (EXIF GPS) included. Visitors to the website can download and extract any location data from images on the website.

Cookies

If you leave a comment on our site you may opt-in to saving your name, email address and website in cookies. These are for your convenience so that you do not have to fill in your details again when you leave another comment. These cookies will last for one year.

If you have an account and you log in to this site, we will set a temporary cookie to determine if your browser accepts cookies. This cookie contains no personal data and is discarded when you close your browser.

When you log in, we will also set up several cookies to save your login information and your screen display choices. Login cookies last for two days, and screen options cookies last for a year. Embedded content from other websites

Articles on this site may include embedded content (e.g. videos, images, articles, etc.). Embedded content from other websites behaves in the exact same way as if the visitor has visited the other website.

These websites may collect data about you, use cookies, embed additional third-party tracking, and monitor your interaction with that embedded content, including tracing your interaction with the embedded content if you have an account and are logged in to that website.

Analytics

Google Tag Manager

This website uses Google Tag Manager.

Google Tag Manager is a solution operated by Google LLC. 1600 Amphitheatre Parkway, Mountain View, CA 94043, USA (“Google”) that allows marketed website tags to be managed using an interface.

The Tag Manager tool itself (which implements the tags) is a cookie-less domain and does not register personal data.

The tool causes other tags to be activated which may, for their part, register data under certain circumstances. Google Tag Manager does not access this information.

If recording has been deactivated on domain or cookie level, this setting will remain in place for all tracking tags implemented with Google Tag Manager.

Google Analytics

This website uses Google Analytics.

Google Analytics’ cookies are used to collect information about how visitors use our site.

The cookies collect information in an anonymous form, including the number of visitors to the site, where visitors have come to the site from and the pages they visited. We cannot identify who you are.

We use the information to compile reports and to help us improve the site.

To opt out of being tracked by Google Analytics across all websites visit https://tools.google.com/dlpage/gaoptout.

Google Ads Remarketing

This website uses the Google Ads remarketing service.

We may use Google Ads to advertise to previous visitors to our site.

This could be in the form of an advertisement on the Google search results page, or a site in the Google Display Network.

Although we advertise to you, we do not know who you are. It is based on the use of cookies.

Any data collected will be used in accordance with our own and Google’s privacy policies.

You can set preferences for how Google advertises to you using the Google Ad Preferences page.

You can opt out of interest-based advertising entirely by third-party vendor’s use of cookies by visiting the Network Advertising Initiative opt-out page.

Facebook-Pixel / Custom Audiences

This website uses the remarketing function “Custom Audiences” of Facebook Inc., 1601 Willow Road, Menlo Park, CA, USA “(“Facebook”).

This function is used to present interest-based advertisements to visitors to this website when they visit the social network Facebook. For this purpose, Facebook’s remarketing tag has been implemented on this website.

This tag establishes a direct connection to the Facebook servers when you visit the website. This information is transmitted to the Facebook server that you have visited this website and Facebook assigns this information to your personal Facebook user account.

We are not using advanced matching (creating Custom Audiences from Customer Lists).

For more information about Facebook’s collection and use of the data and your rights and choices about protecting your privacy, please see Facebook’s privacy policy at https://www.facebook.com/about/privacy/.

You can deactivate the remarketing function “Custom Audiences” at https://www.facebook.com/settings. You must be logged into Facebook to do this.

LinkedIn

This website uses the LinkedIn Conversion Tracking and Insight Tag.

The LinkedIn Insight Tag allows us to track conversions, retarget website visitors, and unlock additional insights about members interacting with our LinkedIn adverts.

The LinkedIn Insight Tag enables the collection of metadata such as IP address information, timestamp, and events such as page views. All data is encrypted. The LinkedIn browser cookie is stored in a visitor’s browser until they delete the cookie or the cookie expires (there’s a rolling six-month expiration from the last time the visitor’s browser loaded the Insight Tag).

You can opt out of cookies from LinkedIn on your LinkedIn settings page and recommend you read their Cookie Policy for more information.

Who we share your data with

How long we retain your data

If you leave a comment, the comment and its metadata are retained indefinitely. This is so we can recognize and approve any follow-up comments automatically instead of holding them in a moderation queue.

For users that register on our website (if any), we also store the personal information they provide in their user profile. All users can see, edit, or delete their personal information at any time (except they cannot change their username). Website administrators can also see and edit that information.

What rights you have over your data

If you have an account on this site, or have left comments, you can request to receive an exported file of the personal data we hold about you, including any data you have provided to us. You can also request that we erase any personal data we hold about you. This does not include any data we are obliged to keep for administrative, legal, or security purposes.

Where we send your data

Visitor comments may be checked through an automated spam detection service.
